How to calculate Amazon FBA profit accurately

An FBA payout is not the same as profit. Amazon may deduct referral fees, fulfillment fees, storage and selling-plan charges, while your business still pays for inventory, inbound freight, packaging and advertising. This calculator places those costs in one model so the result reflects the economics of a single unit.

Start with the customer-facing item price and any shipping collected. Enter the referral rate for the product category, then copy the current FBA fulfillment and storage estimates from Amazon tools. Do not reuse a fee from a different marketplace, size tier or season.

Product cost should include the landed acquisition cost you assign to one sellable unit. Add inbound shipping, prep or packaging, advertising and other recurring costs. For a Professional plan, the monthly subscription is allocated across monthly units; low sales volume therefore produces a higher cost per unit.

Read profit together with margin and ROI. Margin measures profit as a percentage of revenue, while this calculator’s ROI compares profit with product cost. A product can show a healthy ROI but a weak margin if fees and ad spend consume much of the selling price.

Run conservative, expected and optimistic scenarios. Increase ad cost, storage and fulfillment assumptions before ordering inventory, and compare result with Amazon’s own Revenue Calculator before making a sourcing decision.

Formula

Amazon FBA profit formula

The model subtracts both Amazon charges and seller-controlled costs from sale revenue.

  1. Revenue = item price + shipping charged
  2. Amazon fees = referral + fulfillment + surcharge + storage + inbound placement + other Amazon fees + allocated plan fee
  3. Total costs = Amazon fees + product cost + inbound shipping + packaging + advertising + other costs
  4. Profit = revenue − total costs
  5. Margin = profit ÷ revenue × 100
  6. ROI = profit ÷ product cost × 100

Frequently asked questions

Amazon FBA Profit Calculator FAQ

Why is Amazon payout different from profit?

Payout is the money Amazon transfers after marketplace deductions. Profit also subtracts product cost, inbound freight, packaging, advertising and other business costs that Amazon does not know.

Which referral fee should I enter?

Use the current rate for the exact marketplace and product category. Amazon referral fees vary by category and can use tiered rates.

Should I include PPC advertising?

Yes. Enter the average advertising cost attributed to one sold unit, not the campaign’s total spend.

How should I treat the Professional plan fee?

Enter the monthly plan fee and realistic monthly unit volume. The calculator allocates the subscription across those units.

Does this replace Amazon Revenue Calculator?

No. Use Amazon’s official calculator for current platform estimates, then use this tool to add your own product and operating costs.

Is ROI the same as margin?

No. Margin is profit divided by revenue. ROI here is profit divided by product cost.
