Calculator guide

Estimate border charges without hiding assumptions

Enter product value, freight, insurance and any other dutiable costs according to the destination country valuation rules. The calculator adds those amounts to form a customs value.

Duty is customs value multiplied by the entered duty rate. Import tax is calculated on customs value plus duty, then brokerage is added to estimate total border charges.

Actual treatment depends on tariff classification, origin, trade agreements, de minimis thresholds, valuation rules and local tax law. A commercial invoice alone may not determine the final charge.

Use the result for planning and verify the tariff code, rate and taxable base with the destination customs authority or a licensed broker before shipping.

Formula

Estimate border charges without hiding assumptions

Customs value = Product value + Freight + Insurance + Other dutiable costs; Duty = Customs value × Duty rate; Import tax = (Customs value + Duty) × Tax rate

  1. Build the customs value.
  2. Apply the duty rate.
  3. Add duty to the tax base.
  4. Apply import tax and add brokerage.

Inputs

Scenario
$10,000 product value + $800 freight + $200 insurance = $11,000 customs value. At 5% duty and 20% tax, duty is $550 and import tax is $2,310 before brokerage.

Results

Result
$10,000 product value + $800 freight + $200 insurance = $11,000 customs value. At 5% duty and 20% tax, duty is $550 and import tax is $2,310 before brokerage.

Frequently asked questions

Customs Duty Calculator FAQ

What should I verify before using this calculator?

Verify the reporting period, included cost categories, units, currency and source records. Save those assumptions with the result.

How accurate is the result?

The arithmetic follows the displayed formula. Accuracy depends on complete inputs, consistent definitions and values from the same reporting period.

Can I use another currency?

Yes. Keep every monetary input in the same currency. The calculator does not convert exchange rates.

Should I use forecast or actual data?

Use actual data for performance review and documented assumptions for planning. Label forecasts clearly and compare them with actual results later.

Why should I compare several periods?

One period can be distorted by seasonality, promotions, delayed payments or unusual purchases. A consistent trend is more informative.

Is this accounting, tax or professional advice?

No. It is an independent planning tool. Reconcile results with your accounting records and qualified advisers where required.

Are my inputs uploaded?

No. Calculator inputs are processed locally in the browser and do not need to be sent to a server.
