Calculator guide

Test discounts before publishing a promotion

Discounts reduce revenue immediately while product cost usually remains unchanged. Calculate the full order subtotal, discount amount and post-discount gross profit before launching a code or automatic discount.

Gross profit in this calculator subtracts product cost only. Payment fees, shipping subsidies, app fees, returns and customer-acquisition cost should be added in a full profit model.

Quantity-based promotions can increase order value but may also reduce margin per unit. Compare the expected conversion and basket-size lift with the margin sacrificed.

Check stacking, minimum purchase, customer eligibility and usage limits in Shopify. Test the checkout path before promotion.

Formula

Test discounts before publishing a promotion

Discount amount = Original subtotal × discount rate; Gross profit = Discounted subtotal − product cost × quantity

  1. Calculate original subtotal.
  2. Apply the discount rate.
  3. Subtract discount from subtotal.
  4. Subtract total product cost and calculate margin.

Frequently asked questions

Shopify Discount Calculator FAQ

What should I verify before using this calculator?

Verify country, platform plan, product category, tax treatment, currency and the effective date of every rate.

How accurate is the result?

The arithmetic follows the displayed formula. Accuracy depends on complete inputs, current rates and consistent treatment of taxes, refunds, shipping and other costs.

Can I use another currency?

Yes. Keep every monetary input in the same currency. The calculator does not convert exchange rates.

Should tax be included in revenue?

Use one documented convention. For profitability analysis, many sellers use revenue excluding pass-through sales tax or VAT, but local accounting rules may differ.

How should I handle refunds?

Use expected refund and return costs in planning, then reconcile with actual platform reports. Do not count refunded revenue as retained sales.

Are platform rates guaranteed?

No. Platforms can change rates by country, plan, category, payment method or contract. Verify current official documentation before a pricing decision.

Are my inputs uploaded?

No. Calculator inputs are processed locally in the browser.
